It’s been more than a week since Veteran’s Day, when I attended a short, but solemn ceremony in Newark to pay tribute to those who put their lives on hold and at risk to defend our way of life.
Yet, I’m still troubled by the sense of hypocrisy and frustration I felt in realizing that, while we publicly celebrate these men and women, we have quietly allowed so many of them over the years to live without proper healthcare and disappear into the fringes of our society.
How did we let this happen?
These are the people who embody the very spirit invoked by President John F. Kennedy when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”
Yet, beyond paying some lip-service to the sacrifices of veterans one day a year, many of our elected leaders have ignored the problem of understaffed Veteran Administration hospitals and the difficulties military people face transitioning into civilian employment. Our elected leaders have instead adopted the cause du jour of Hollywood celebrities, pandering to pop-culture crusades for sanctuary states and giving away the rewards of responsible citizenship to people who are illegally in our nation.
Our priorities in America are being turned upside-down.
During the days leading up to Veterans Day and in the time since, I watched career politicians on the federal and state level lecture us about ending our national borders, providing free healthcare to illegal immigrants, and giving driver’s licenses to people illegally in our state.
Governor Murphy and his Attorney General Gurbir Grewal have barred law enforcement officers from helping federal agents identify even criminals in our nation illegally. Congressman Tom Malinowski has joined with radicals like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar in Washington to vote against notifying federal authorities when illegal immigrants try to buy guns, yet they want to take guns from law abiding citizens.
They are all celebrating their efforts to give millions of dollars in free college aid to illegal immigrants and millions more for lawyers to help them fight federal detention. Our so-called leaders have completely abandoned any effort to fix our broken immigration system as they instead immerse themselves deeper into the partisan political fight behind the impeachment frenzy.
Make no mistake, I understand the honest yearning of people trying to get into America anyway possible to make a better life for themselves and their families.
